If you just did a Detox Treatment with me in Raleigh, here’s the most important rule for the next 48 hours: keep your scalp calm. That means no heavy sweating, no swimming or hot tubs, and no harsh heat styling or abrasive products. The Detox Treatment is only 15 minutes, but the way you treat your scalp right after is what keeps your hair feeling light, clean, and balanced instead of swinging back into buildup or irritation.
Your first 24 to 48 hours after a Detox Treatment (keep it simple)
A Detox Treatment removes impurities and resets the scalp. Right after, the goal is to avoid anything that reintroduces residue or stirs up sensitivity. A lot of my Brentwood and Northeast Raleigh clients ask the same thing, especially commuters near Capital Boulevard and I-440: “Can I work out after work?” For the first 48 hours, I generally recommend you skip heavy sweating if you can.
48-hour quick rules: Avoid heavy sweating, chlorine or saltwater, steam rooms, hot tubs, and aggressive heat styling. If you rinse, use lukewarm water and keep your hands gentle on the scalp.
Washing and rinsing
If you can wait a day or two to shampoo, do it. Your scalp usually settles nicely when you give it a little quiet time. If you need to rinse because you were caught in rain or you feel sweaty, use lukewarm water and don’t scrub with your nails. Use only a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo that I recommend for your scalp, and keep conditioner off the scalp unless I specifically told you otherwise.
Heat and brushing
Hold off on hot tools for 24 to 48 hours, especially if your scalp tends to run dry or flaky. If you blow-dry, keep the airflow moving and stay out of that super-hot, close-to-the-scalp zone. Detangle gently and slowly. If you’re tender in any spots, don’t force a brush through it.
Days 3 to 7: keeping that clean, balanced scalp feeling
Once you’re past the first couple of days, your focus shifts to maintenance. This is the week where people either keep that “my hair feels so good” result, or they accidentally bury their scalp again with heavy product and too much dry shampoo.
In Raleigh, the seasons matter. Humid summer air often means you can go a little lighter on oils and butters near the scalp, and you may need to rinse more often if you sweat. In the drier fall air, your scalp can feel tighter, so you may do better washing less frequently and adding a small amount of a lightweight scalp serum instead of piling on thick leave-ins.
A small habit that helps: If you use styling products, keep them mid-length to ends for the first week, and cleanse your hairline well on shampoo day. That’s where buildup sneaks back fastest.
Color-treated hair: what’s normal
If you have color-treated hair, it’s possible to see a little light fading after detoxing, especially if there was a lot of residue sitting on the hair. That’s not you doing anything wrong. Stick with color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo, keep water lukewarm, and let me know if your tone looks different than you expected so I can guide your next step.
Detox Treatment-friendly products: gentle detox shampoo, light serum, less buildup
After a Detox Treatment, more product usually isn’t the answer. The right product is. I’ll point you toward what works for your scalp type, but these are the categories that tend to keep results looking fresh.
Gentle, sulfate-free shampoo
This supports the work we just did instead of stripping or over-drying. If you’re used to a squeaky-clean feeling, expect it to feel cleaner longer without needing to scrub.
Lightweight scalp serum or leave-in
Look for lightweight and non-greasy. The goal is comfort, not coating the scalp. If you’re prone to clogged follicles, heavy oils often make things worse.
What to avoid for a week
Harsh clarifiers, gritty scrubs, strong menthol tingle products, and heavy waxy edge controls right at the hairline. These are common reasons detox results don’t last.
If you want a deeper read on day-to-day upkeep, I also have a guide on shampoo, scalp care, and conditioning treatments in Brentwood that pairs well with detox aftercare.
If something feels “off, ” text or call us, and tell me what you used
A little dryness or light flaking can happen as your scalp re-balances, especially if you’re moving between Raleigh’s humid summer and dry fall air. What’s not normal is prolonged redness, burning, swelling, or flaking that just keeps getting worse. If that’s you, call the salon and let me know your appointment date and every product you’ve used since, including oils, edge control, and dry shampoo.
"Great service ALWAYS. Knowledgeable staff, good hair products, good ambience- what more could one ask for!?"

Local note: If you’re in Brentwood or Northeast Raleigh near Capital Boulevard and I-440, it’s easy to pop in for quick product pick-up or a follow-up check. I also see clients coming in from Knightdale, Wendell, Wake Forest, Rolesville, and Zebulon who prefer to grab what they need between errands.
Detox Treatment aftercare FAQs (straight answers)
How long after a Detox Treatment can I wash my hair?
If you can, wait 24 to 48 hours before shampooing. That gives your scalp time to settle. If you truly need to wash sooner, keep it gentle with a sulfate-free shampoo, lukewarm water, and no aggressive scrubbing.
Can I exercise or go for a run after my Detox Treatment?
I recommend skipping heavy sweating for the first 48 hours. Sweat and friction at the scalp can irritate freshly detoxed skin and can push you right back into buildup. If you have to work out, keep it light, avoid tight hats or headbands, and rinse with lukewarm water afterward.
Will a Detox Treatment remove or fade my hair color?
It can cause slight fading for some color-treated hair, especially if there was a lot of buildup on the hair. Stick to color-safe, sulfate-free products and lukewarm water, and tell me if you notice a tone shift so I can guide your next move.
What products should I use (or avoid) after a Detox Treatment?
Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and a lightweight scalp serum or leave-in I recommend. For the first week, avoid harsh clarifying shampoos, gritty scrubs, heavy oils on the scalp, strong tingling formulas, and waxy edge products right along the hairline.
How soon can I swim or use a hot tub after a Detox Treatment?
Give it 48 hours. Chlorine, saltwater, and hot tub heat can irritate the scalp and mess with the balanced feel we’re trying to keep. If swimming is unavoidable, talk to me first so I can suggest a protective plan for your hair and scalp.
